When you spend one-third of your life on the mattress, have you ever thought about its hygiene? Not yet? Then it’s time that you do!

The combination of body sweat, dust mites, etc are known to be the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. And ignoring this can have a deep impact on your quality of sleep. According to Sleep Council, an average bed contains 10,000 dust mites producing more than 2 million droppings which are highly allergic. Furthermore, if you have pets or small kids, the chances are your mattress might have stains you don’t even know existed! So, regular mattress cleaning is important for healthy living and better sleep in the night. But, how to clean a mattress at home? How to clean a mattress stain? How to clean a mattress cover? It isn’t too difficult to do as it requires some basic cleaning to keep your mattress refreshed as long as you want. To know how to go about it, follow the steps mentioned below to keep the mattress in top condition.

How to Clean a Mattress at Home

Step 1

Begin the cleaning process by removing everything that’s covering the mattress. Strip the bed of all sheets along with pillowcases and then put them for washing. Read carefully the care labels if the fabric is delicate.

Step 2

Next comes vacuuming the mattress. Sometimes food crumbs, moisture, dust, dirt gets accumulated over time.  To get rid of all, vacuum the entire mattress. Rather you should make this part of your daily routine as it doesn’t take much time.

Step 3

Once you have finished vacuuming, check for stains if any. Use non-toxic, natural enzyme cleaners for hard stains to chemically break them down. Or else try a simple solution of hydrogen peroxide, little dish soap and baking soda and then rub with a clean rag on the stained area

Step 4

Now deodorize the entire mattress with the help of baking soda. Sprinkle it all over the mattress and let it rest for at least 10 minutes. This helps to get rid of bad odour to make way for a fresh smelling mattress. Then vacuum again to remove the powder from your mattress.

Step 5

After cleaning, let it air out for some time. This dries out the mattress completely if trapped inside and naturally kills all bacteria as well! Also, on normal days you should keep the window of the room open for letting in the sunlight.

Step 6

The last step is protecting the mattress. Buy a waterproof mattress cover and place it under your bed sheet to protect it from sweat, stain or any dirt. The best thing is that you can wash the cover anytime you want.
